The Goodness Of God: 5 Blessings We Thank God Every Day

By Jes Nadayag

Your goodness is running after; it’s running after me.”

A popular Christian Worship song by Jenn Johnson of Bethel Music visualizes the goodness of God as running after us. However, in our current world filled with conflict, climate crisis, and COVID, finding the goodness of God can be difficult. Worries, doubts, and concerns take our eyes away from God and plunge us into a world of selfishness—tearing us from our families, friends, and everyone we hold dear. That is why this blog is perfect for the season, every season.

What is the Goodness of God?

The Goodness of God is the essence of God and is one of His characters. That is why we can trust that He is always good in and out of season. As James 1:17 says, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” Thus, you can trust that everything good comes from Him, and He will never do evil.

What Are the 5 Goodness of God We Should Be Thankful Every Day?

We know that God is good and that everything good comes from Him. However, with all God has given us, we easily forget. Instead, we become unable to discern His gifts and goodness in our lives. Here are five things we should be thankful to God in every situation.

The Gift of Life

The first thing we should be thankful to God and see as His goodness is the gift of life. We all know that Job 1:21b says:

“… The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; Blessed be the name of the Lord.” (Amplified Bible)

So, our life and death are not ours to control. Instead, God has the power to add or end a life. Hence, we are accountable to God for every breath we take and what we do with it. So make sure that we will not forget God. Instead, let us start celebrating God’s goodness whether we have it all or not—whether we are sick or healed, rich or poor; God is worthy of worship and praise!

The Gift of Family

Another gift God had for us on this earth is family. God wills it that we should live as families. He said in Genesis 1:28:

God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

His idea for us is to have families, to increase in number. In this way, we mimic God’s concept of community as written in Matthew 3:17. That is why if you have a beautiful family, thank God for them. They are not perfect, but God gave them to you as He gave you to them.

The Gift of Trade

Another thing we ought to be thankful always is our Trade (business or job). Whether we like it or not, God is the one who prospers the work of our hands (Deut. 30:9). He is also the one responsible for sustaining the business or job. As 1 Cor. 3:7 says:

“So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.”

Although the context here is about discipleship, it is still consistent because God is still the one who sustains everything. Unless God builds the house, its builders labor in vain (Ps 127:1). So, if you have a tiresome job or a growing business, try to thank God every time. Let us find ways to glorify God by working with good intentions and loving people as we love ourselves.

The Gift of Health

We usually hear people say health is wealth, but it is true. When we are sick, tired, or unhappy, it is easy to feel down and inadequate. That is why, if we need to understand one thing, it is that we should be celebrating God’s blessing of health, every day. However, in this fast-paced world, a time for giving thanks is not counted as productive.

Nonetheless, we need to break the norm and celebrate God’s goodness as we sing and praise God always. Always remember that some people in hospitals only desire good health while we disregard it. So Thank God today!

The Gift of Protection

Lastly, we have to thank God for constantly protecting us. From the time we wake up, ’til the time we sleep, God is constantly protecting us. A famous bible verse says: “A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. (Psalm 91:7)”

How amazing is God’s protection? We should be thankful to God for continuously watching and guiding us, even though sometimes we decide to oppose His will (Psalm 23:4). Nonetheless, his protection is always there, for our God never sleeps or slumbers (Ps. 121:1).

Conclusion: God is Good

In all of these, God is great. He holds everything and sustains us (Col. 1:17). However, most of the time, we do not have the capacity to fully comprehend the goodness of God. So, if you are filled with problems left and right today, focus not on the problems.

With faith, have the courageous joy to be joyful in every situation (Phil. 4:4). If you don’t know the Goodness of God chords and Goodness of God lyrics, open up your browser, and with one voice we will sing:

“Your goodness is running after—It’s running after me.”
